Project Overview:

The client had recently finished their new build and was looking to complete the backyard as well.

They wanted a soft, usable lawn and simple garden beds that would grow into a green privacy screen along the back fence.

They contacted our Cairns gardening and landscaping team to handle the full landscape installation and ensure it was completed with care and precision.

Challenges

The side of the new home started out as a forgotten strip. The ground was full of builder’s rubble, rough fill and patches of persistent weeds.

The narrow space sat in partial shade beside the house, which made grass hard to establish and created a spot where water could pool along the fence.

There were no clear garden edges or lawn areas, and it certainly was not a place you would want to walk barefoot or for kids to play.

Our challenge was to clear the mess, fix the soil levels and turn this rough side yard into a safe, green and low maintenance part of the new home.

Our Process

  • We started by removing all existing weeds and treating the area to prevent them from competing with the new lawn.
  • Once the site was cleared, we supplied and spread three cubic metres of quality under turf sand to level the ground and create a smooth base.
  • With the ground prepared, our team laid 190 m² of Platinum Zoysia turf, watering it thoroughly on the same day. This turf was chosen for its soft feel, durability, and suitability to local conditions.
  • To define a garden along the rear boundary, we installed treated pine timber (200 x 50 mm) fixed to stakes, creating a garden edge about one metre from the fence.
  • We added two cubic metres of soil to the new garden bed, preparing it for planting.
  • Eleven Lilly Pillys were planted along the fence line to create a neat hedge now and a dense privacy screen as they grow.
  • Finally, we spread one cubic metre of tea tree mulch to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and give the garden a finished, coastal look.
  • All green waste and offcuts from the project were removed from the site.

Safety and Planning

Our licensed, insured crew marked out the new garden line, checked for services along the fence, and made sure soil levels would not push water back toward the house.

We used the right equipment for the tight space, kept offcuts and rubble contained as we worked, and loaded all waste straight into the trailer so the area stayed secure and well-kept.

Project Outcome: The new build now has a finished lawn and welcoming backyard

By the end of the project, the rough builder’s strip had become a neat corridor of Platinum Zoysia turf with a straight, mulched garden bed running the full length of the fence.

The new Lilly Pilly hedge is already softening the boundary and will grow into a lush green screen, while the tidy lawn gives the family a comfortable path from the back gate to the patio.

With good soil preparation, quality turf and simple planting, the homeowner now has a clean, modern backyard that is easy to maintain and ready to enjoy every day.
